A MAKYBLOirt Account.—A writer who dates at Raleigh, and signs himself “S,” has been publishing a series of articles in the N. Y. Times, on the “Mineral Resources of North Carolina,” (or rather of the Deep Rivsr region of North Carolina.) We have ourselves, from personal observation as well as from the Reports of Professor Emmons and otherg, an idea that these re- sources are of immense extent and value, but we con fess that this Raleigh writer has “astonished” us, (as he proposed to do,) not only as to the extent of those re sources, but still more as to the sums invested in works for their development, the number of hands employed therein, and the results of their labors. The Deep River Coal and Iron Company, for instance, so he says, “paid $110,000 for the estate, [1000 acres, 6 miles up the river from Egypt,] and they have since expended in cRjh paid out for the construction of works, for ma chinery, and for opening mines, about $176,000. They estimate the completion of the works, so as to brinp fully into operation all the resources of the estate, will cost them perhaps $35,000 more—making the entire cost of estate and outfit $320,000.” “When in full work they employ about 100 men.” These are considerable sums! A very particular account is giv en of large buildings, 75 feet square, all of stone or brick, with 2 engines, 4 boilers, and a vast deal of other machinery, four wrought-iron stills, holding 1000 gallons each, two of^ which are now in use and “can be run twice full every 24 hours—making a total of 4,000 gallons, or 100 bbls. per day,” of coal oil. This crude oil is produced at an average cost of 4J cents per gallon, and is refined and delivered and sold in New York at a cost of 21f cents per gallon. It readily sells in New York at 85 to 90 cents per gallon. But even this is not all. In making every 100 gal lons of oil, a ton of pig iron is produced. This costs $9 65, delivered and sold in New York; and it sells there at $23 to $30 per ton. But this company has coal also. This coal costs to lay down and sell in New York $4 46 a ton; and “it sells now at $8 a ton.” Seeing such a profitable business in each of its branches, we are tempted to follow the writer in his in quiries into the extent of the property. He says there are 9,680,000 tons of coal on the estate, 24,200,000 tons of iron ore, 130,680,000 tons of slate stone, each ton of this yielding at a low average 39 gallons of oil! After all this it can hardly surprise any one that this Raleiyh writer says,— “My arithmetic does not go far enough to multiply the yield of oil, pig iron, and coal by the quantity of the raw material—and again to multiply the product by the net profit on sales. To give these results wotlld run you short of cyphers. Some adept in mathematics might figure it up, but you would not be able to com prehend the result any more than you could compre hend the causes of the panic of 1857, or the President’s last message, or the speed you must travel to keep up in a race with the chariot of the sun, or to hob-nob with the man in the moon. “The Deep River Company, though nominally a pub lic body, is in reality a close corporation. There are not to exceed ten persons who have any interest, and t hey, thinking thry have a big thing, pursue the even tenor of their way, without inviting or even permitting co-operation from others.” All right! Don’t sell, by any means! But then it strikes us as a little unkind thus to set everybody’s mouth to watering for a slice of this “big thing",” when nary slice ean be had. Seriously, we apprehend that such writers as this bring discredit and ridicule on the really vast mineral resources of the Deep River region. What has the Company done with all the products of its works, es pecially with the “100 bbls. per day” of coal oil? Has the “local demand,” of which he speaks, absorbed it all, at $1 25 per gallon? An Unsentimental Physician.—^The Paris cor respondent of the Boston Traveller relates the following:— A story is told upon Rayer, the eminent physi cian here. He was called in six weeks ago to at tend a sick child. The child—it was the only child of wealthy parents—recovered its health. A few days alter Rayer had discontinued his visits, the mother of the little invalid called on the Doctor. She said: “My dear doctor, there are services rendered in this world, which money cannot pay. I know not how we could adequate ly reward you for your kindness and attention and skill to poor Ernest. And I have thought that perhaps you would be good enough to accept this little porte monnaie—a mere trifle—but which I embroidered.” “Porte monnaie” roughly re plied the Doctor. “Medicine, Madame, is not a sentimental profession. When we are called in to visit sick people, we want their fees and not their gratitude. Gratitude—humbug! I’d like to see gratitude make the pot boilj and 1 have not only to make my pot boil, but I have got a horse to feed, Madame, and a driver to pay, Madame, and daughters to portion, Madame—and gratitude won’t aid me to do any of these things. Money is what is required—money, Madame—yes, money.” The lady was, as you may well imagine, confound ed byj this burst of indignant taunts, and she could only stammer: “^^ut—Doctor—what is your fee?” “My fee is two thousand francs—and 1 tell you, Madame, there is no use screaming about it. I will not take one sou less.” The lady did not scream. She quietly opened the porte monnaie “I embroidered,’ unrolled the five bank notes ni it, gave two to the Doctor, placed the other three in the porte monnaie, and the latter in her pocket, and bowed profoundly, “Good morning. Doctor,” and made her exit. BOOK-BINDING IN all its kinds, executed with neatness and despatch. Small jobs when done must be paid before delivered, THOS. H. TILLINGHAST. Employment.—A journeyman mechanic in Con necticut, being out of work, and having a family to support, called upon a gentleman of the village to see if he could not give him something to do. The gentleman svsked him what kind of work he could do, besides following his trade. “Oh, most anything,” said the man. The gentleman bethought himself a moment, and then asked,— You’re a Wide Awake, I believe? “Yes sir.” • Have you got your cape and hat yet? “Yes sir.” Well, if you will put them both on, and walk about the streets, with a label attached to the cape, “The Last of the Wide-Awakes,” I’ll give you a dollar and a half per day for the service. “I will,” said the man. _ And at the last accounts he had been working starkie on Evidei,^ Vol. I Wew | of the JVorth Carolina Form Book, FURTHER supply just received.
